I’M WORTH DEFENDING
[IWD] is an International
non-profit NGO with a mandate to operate in different parts of the world.
This program
is designed to empower women, girls and children from being raped through
education and Self-Defense training, to counsel rape survivors and to
sensitize teenage boys to responsible and respectful behavior towards
women and girls. IWD arms women, girls and children against rape and
endangerment, it implies that one can (and indeed should) be armed with
courage, spirit, knowledge and skills whether or not
one is armed with anything else.
Rape is a form of violence that requires definitive actions to be combated
since it humiliates women in a unique way. Consequences of rape are traumatized
personalities, broken self-esteem, suicide attempts and actual suicides,
unwanted pregnancies, possible HIV-infections and other STIs. According
to estimations, one out of five women in the slums of Africa has been raped
at least once in her life. Many women have accepted the behavior of men
as inevitable and somehow got used to it. IWD’s classes have a significant
positive impact on how women, girls and boys think and act in their lives.
The contents transmitted are in accordance with the values of society;
even more: the protection of women, girls and children from rape is mandatory.
IWD's approach is an integral part since it enhances the links between
prevention and aftercare services and it seeks to ensure that the urgent
needs of all women, girls and children are addressed in a meaningful and
sustained way, through tailor made approaches. As IWD we believe that “Your
Security Is Your Responsibility” and to that
end we give you the tools with which to defend yourself and instill the
unalterable
belief
that you are "Worth Defending".
