Snapshots:
On 22nd and 30th April IWD had a class session and studio interview respective for M-net Africa to be aired soon in forty eight (48) African countries. This is yet another milestone that we are proud to share.
Achievements:
• Good rapport and acceptance by the community;
• Features by both print and electronic media i.e CNN, BBC, VOA, Aljazeera,
M-net, SABC, KBC, KTN, Citizen, K-24 Nation Newspaper, Standard Newspaper, The
People
Daily,
Taifa Leo, Parents Magazine, Kenya times, Sunday Express;
•
Linking up with Nairobi Women’s Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital
(Patient Support Center) for the referral and support services for survivors;
• IWD has been able to teach self-defense techniques to the disabled;
• Involving school teachers in our program and some of them have started
taking the classes;
• Imparting very important lessons to pupils/students and enhancing their
self-esteem coupled with self-defense techniques;
• Successful training sessions in organized groups.
Impact:
Having reached a large number of women, girls and children (55,600) since
the inception of the program, IWD has been able to bring change in the lives
of
many, listed
below
are
some of the positive outcomes concerning the program activities.
•
Testimonies of those who came out of real life situations after using some
of the techniques that have been taught, we’ve also heard testimonies
(especially boys/young men) who after taking the life skills class decided
to reform from what they use to do/use to be that had negative impact in
their lives and the community at large;
• Increased knowledge on issues that are discussed during the sessions;
• Most of the women and girls have developed high self-esteem and increased
their security which they believe is part of their responsibility;
• Increased number of people acquiring the skills from time to time;
• A large number of different age groups have been influenced and are very
much willing to take part in learning some of the techniques/skills;
• Reduction in incidences of rape/defilement and other forms of Gender-based
Violence cases within the communities that IWD have been to;
• Since the training of the Gender Defenders, we have seen a reduction
of referral cases that are directly handled by IWD within the community of Korogocho;
• High number of people wants to volunteer because they believe IWD is
doing something powerful;
• Reduction in stigma associated with rape through Rape Survivors Anonymous;
• Increased number of women making use of the library;
• Teenage/young men pledge to be responsible and behaving in a respectful
manner towards women and girls;
What people say about IWD:
"The IWD teaching team in Korogocho is as dedicated an organization as I have seen anywhere. Against all odds, their passionate teaching has been taken to every school and group they can reach, regardless of the hardship and risk to themselves. They also serve up caring aid with their counseling, baby daycare and a host of other educational, preventive and support services. They have saved lives and positively affected their community by lowering violence and fostering mental and emotional health and cooperation. I am blown away by the scope of their powerful work." • No one can stand on our behalf but we (women);
• In every successful man, behind there is a woman, let us respect them;
•
Take more about the need to change men’s attitude towards women/girls
i.e. the root problem);
• IWD is the new face of change in the lives of women, girls and children
who are now able to open-up and talk about issues affecting their lives especially
rape cases and other Gender-Based Violence cases. (Shosho);
• Continue molding girls and giving them the best shape they deserve (Kibera
Hamlet);
•
Initiate other branches of IWD in every area of the country in order to reach
other girls (Sandy Happy Children’s Home);
• Structure of the class; gives a real picture of our lives as girls (Korogocho
Glory Secondary School);
• Spend more time with girls so as to socialize and be able to open-up;
• Create more time especially in institutions;
• Introduce discussion classes on day to day events;
•
Every more women and girls should/must know the skill of defending themselves – to
stand tall and if it has happened to them, IWD – gives the hope.
BRAVO!!
•
From the perspective it’s an amazing session that you do have with
us; your instructors are the kind of people that you will not stop listening
to.
They give us real life experiences. Hope you will be incorporated in
girl guiding movement as part of their curriculum;
• The structure of the class is excellent; it combines lessons in self-defense,
confidence, assertiveness and self-wroth all at once;
• Absolutely brilliant, relevant and important class;
• I feel this is the greatest organization worth spending time with;
• The classes are very interesting and educative; please continue doing
so to the rest of our friends out there. God bless you guys abundantly;
• Keep it up, establish a branch in Mombasa;
• IWD is a good group and can help the female in the society;
• Find a way of advertising the program so that I can reach other Shoshos
in the remote areas of the country;
• Continue giving us information of life skills, so that we can be able
to teach our younger brothers who are unaware;
• You really know what girls do go through, thank you and continue with
the same spirit;
•
You handled the classes in a way that I didn’t expect, it was amazing
and done in a way that even our parents have never done it before;
•
People to volunteer whole-heartedly for the sake of the babies in order to
protect them form rape/defilement, it is indeed their right to be protected
from sexual assault, “let us work together to curb rape"
• I believe that no matter how big the challenge you’ll get there.
Please, please,
please bring the program to Uganda!!!!
