IWD's quality systems provide clear and measurable standards for all
aspects of our program's performance, from measurable outcomes to management
operations. An important method for estimating our effectiveness as an
organization is
through the self-study and peer-review processes for accreditation. This
double check provides IWD with a reliable and
exhaustive evaluation of key organizational dynamics related to quality
improvement.
For the Staff:
The program employs young people with a mean age of 27.5 years who grew
up in informal settlements and therefore knows well the slum culture
and how to interact with people to pass on the message. To perform best
in
their teaching and counseling function, all staff members have received
training in Self-Defense techniques from accredited Self-Defense
trainers from the United States of America (USA), and in psychological
counseling
of survivors of sexual and gender based violence
(SGBV). IWD staff have a wealth of knowledge and skills in dealing
with communal scourges besides rape.
For the Classes:
The goal is to make the lives of women, girls and children safer,
reducing their chances of being raped. Unfortunately, safety is not objectively
quantifiable and rape cases often are not reported. IWD relies on subjective
controls, i.e. personal testimonies of those who have participated, whether
they were successful in averting rape attempts and whether the reported
rape cases or rape assaults are lower than the reported.
Concerning the boys, we have indirect indicators, for example if they spend
their time in gangs and dubious environments or if they are involved in
communal activities, faith based activities, engaging in gainful activities,
e.t.c. Boys who engage in drugs and criminal activities are more likely
to rape women. We want the boys to take full responsibility for all their
actions.
Existing Core Competencies:
• A well trained staff that can handle diverse issues facing the communities;
• A clearly and a well defined prime directive;
•
Effectiveness in managing IWD’s niche;
